‘ANYTOWN, NORTH AMERICA’
A television above a bar.
A talking head is talking:
“…the mob continues to clash with police, and there are reports of widespread looting. Meanwhile, fires continued to burn out of control on Van Horne for roughly thirty minutes before police arrived, local business owners are calling on Chief Walcott to explain the delay in their deployment to the area…”
Jimmy’s nineteen, havin’ a beer after his shift at Pizza Hut. Jimmy kinda wonders why the cops took so long too.
Harlan’s a good working class stiff. Harlan says, “Hey, turn that shit off.”
Jimmy says, “For sure, but I just wanna check this out. I mean the cops, the cops you know, they kinda got outta control—”
Harlan says, “Shut the fuck up, kid. Have another beer. Switch it tah the game or I’ll break ya fuckin’ head. Thugs got what they deserved. Settin’ cop cars on fire and shit, then they wonder why the fuzz flips out.” Harlan yells at the TV, “’Cos ya had it fuckin’ comin’.”
Glum Jimmy complies.
The game’s in the background now, and the riot images nag, nag at Jimmy like when his best friend Danny bought it in Afghanistan. But not for long
IED they said
a few more beers
closed-casket they said
take care of that problem.
